“Technical issues” with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service’s biometric enrolment service have resulted in US nationals who are seeking to work, study, or settle in the UK being unable to complete their visa applications. The issue, which first arose on 29 March 2019 and still persists today, is said to be the result of the Home Office’s failure to make a payment to the US Department of Homeland Security. During this period, affected US nationals have been turned away from application support centres, and instead directed to VFS Global – a private company which charges in the region of $2k for a fast-track service.
The Home Office statement assured US nationals that they are “working to restore the service as soon as possible”, and went on to point out that it is assisting with organising free appointments at VFS Global in the interim. The Home Office, Department of Homeland Security, and the US Citizenship and Immigration Service have all declined to comment on the matter.
